What is a Yum Berry Anyhow?

Have you been wondering what exactly is the flavor in the delicious Yummy Yum Berry Antioxidant Bar? Is there actually such a thing as a Yum Berry – Yes! Also known as the Chinese Bayberry (Myrica rubra) is a fruit-bearing tree that is native to China and other parts of East Asia. It is known by a variety of names including Yum Berry, but also Yangmei, Yamamomo, Japanese Bayberry, and many others.

The Bayberry tree is an evergreen or deciduous shrub, or small tree, that can grow up up to 10m tall. The Yum Berry fruit is small, round to oval in shape, with a rough and bumpy texture. The color can very from pale pink to dark red – this depends on the variety as well as on the maturity. The edible flesh is juicy and sweet with a tartness that varies depending on the ripeness of the fruit.

When tasting the Yummy Yum Berry bar you may not quite be able to identify the flavor of the berry, as it has quite the unique flavor profile – combining sweetness and tartness. The taste is often described as resembling a mixture of strawberry, raspberry, and plum, with just a hint of tanginess. This unique taste makes them a popular choice to eat as both a fresh fruit, but also to be used as an ingredient in various culinary dishes.

Bayberry trees are primarily found in China, particularly in regions like Zhejiang, Fujian, and Guangdong. They grow best in subtropical and tropical climates; with the fruit typically ready to harvest during the summer months, from June to July. Although the Yum Berry has been and continues to be quite popular in China, it is gaining popularity throughout other areas of Asia, and is starting to be introduced in other regions of the world as well. At Pranam Superfoods, we are pleased to be able to bring this unique fruit, packed with so many nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants, to those who enjoy our bars.

Traditionally, the Yum Berry is most commonly enjoyed by eating them fresh, eaten as is, or put into a fruit salad. They are also commonly used to make jams, jellies, dried snacks, as well as juices and wines. They may also be used in savory dishes to add just a touch of sweetness and tartness to dishes like soups, stews, and sauces.

These tasty little berries may bring about a sense of nostalgia to many people in China – evoking memories of their childhood summers spent picking these berries to share with family and friends. In some cultures, the Yum Berry is also associated with luck, prosperity, and growth.

We hope that as you taste the Yummy Yum Berry Antioxidant bars for the first time, or taste them once again, you can take a moment to enjoy the unique flavors that the Yum Berry brings to these bars, while your body thanks you for the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that they contain.
